CMS/Reports: Scheduled Objects and Instances

13 April 2010

Unless a Business Objects deployment is carefully planned, it can often lead to a "run-away" installation, whereby users are given just enough control to be able to arbitrarily schedule any report at any time to anyone.  In order to better manage these scenarios, we've developed another free report in our CMS/Reports series which helps administrators and end-users better understand the reports and objects that are on schedules within a deployment.

The report - Scheduled Objects and Instances - is intended to advise on just that: The who, what, when, where and why of scheduled objects.  Some of the more interesting benefits of having the ability to deploy a report like this are:

Delegated Administration:

Deploy the report to Infoview for mass consumption and allow it to refresh in real-time, minimizing Administrator involvement in having to load up the CMC, fetch data from Instance Manager, or struggle with configuring oddly placed usergroups just so that they may use Instance Manager from the CMC.

Hierarchical Viewing:

We mention  hierarchical viewing in almost all of our CMS/Reports offering simply because we feel it's just that important.  When we maintain data and objects within Business Objects, our approach to object management tends to become folder-centric.  For this reason, in the main view of the Scheduled Instances report we keep all objects nested within their respective folder path.

Raw Data Output:

Larger, data-rich reports sometimes require additional massaging or split-pane scrolling, lending themselves to further manipulation in tools like OpenOffice or Microsoft Excel.  For this reason, CMS/Reports with such qualities now include a Raw Data report tab to allow for full dataset export to CSV.

Stayed tuned for global metrics and performance reports that will also include Scheduled Instances statistics across one or more CMS databases and other high-quality measurements in the future release of the Scheduled Objects and Instances report!
