Restore to a New Workspace¶
Define a new workspace as the restore target, optionally on a capacity; MetaMiner creates it when the restore runs, before writing any object into it.
Before you begin¶
- You are on the Place step of the restore wizard (see Restore Content).
- Your Microsoft account may create workspaces in the tenant (a Power BI tenant setting).
- To put the workspace on a capacity, you have assign rights on that capacity. Listing capacities asks for the delegated
Capacity.Read.Allpermission; assigning one asks forCapacity.ReadWrite.Allwhen the restore runs (see Prerequisites and Access).
Steps¶
- Select the rows to send to the new workspace and open Target workspace.
-
In Choose a target workspace, click New workspace....
The New workspace dialog opens.
-
Fill in the fields.
Field Notes Name Required. Workspace names are unique per tenant: the dialog says A workspace called "..." already exists if the name is taken, or No workspace called "..." exists in this tenant when it is free. Description Optional. Capacity No capacity (Pro), or a capacity from the list. While the list loads it reads reading capacities.... -
Choose the capacity.
Choice Result No capacity (Pro) Power BI content restores into a Pro workspace. Fabric items - notebooks, lakehouses, warehouses - need a Fabric capacity and are reported as failed. A capacity marked - you cannot assign to it Not usable: you do not have rights to put a workspace on it. Choose another, or none. A capacity you can assign The workspace is put on it. The dialog notes that assigning needs one extra permission, asked for when the restore runs. An empty capacity list means none could be listed for your account, not that the restore will fail; you can still create the workspace without one.
-
Click Define.
Back in the picker, the workspace appears with the tag (new). Set Apply to: and click Use this workspace. Rows going there show Create in What happens.
-
To change the name, description or capacity later, select the new workspace in the picker and click Edit... (Change the workspace this restore will create), then Save.

Nothing is created until the restore runs
The workspace is only defined in the wizard. Cancelling the wizard leaves the tenant untouched. When you click Restore, MMS creates the workspace first, then writes the objects into it.
Verify¶
On Review, the right-hand panel shows the workspace marked + create. After the run, the workspace exists in Power BI with the restored items, on the capacity you chose.
Troubleshooting¶
A new workspace called ... is already set up in this restore
You already defined a workspace with that name in this wizard. Pick it from the list instead of defining it again.
Fabric items failed in the new workspace
The workspace has no capacity. Assign it a Fabric capacity in Power BI, then restore those items again into it.
