Installing New Releases

Get a new MetaMiner release and upgrade the server and the clients without losing configuration or collected metadata.

Before you begin

  • Read the release notes of the new build. They state which installer applies and whether any Power BI data must be collected again after the upgrade.
  • Decide which installer to use. See Full and Update Installers.
  • Back up:
    • server\config\ (configuration, including config.json with the Power BI environment)
    • server\licenses\
    • server\MetaMinerServer.properties, if you created one
    • the MetaMiner Database; see Back Up and Restore MMDB
  • Plan a maintenance window and tell client users. The installer stops the server and closes MetaMiner programs on the host. Scheduled backup jobs do not run while the server is stopped.

Where releases are published

Releases are posted for customers in the Releases category of the Infolytik Community Portal. Each release topic has the release notes, the download links and any extra instructions for that release.

Steps

  1. Download the installer named in the release post to the MetaMiner server host.
  2. Optional: in the MetaMiner Administrator, click Stop Server and wait until the service has stopped. The installer stops it anyway, but stopping first lets you confirm a clean stop.
  3. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. Install into the existing folder, normally C:\Program Files\Infolytik\MetaMiner. The installer replaces the program files and keeps configuration, licenses, logs and MMDB data. It does not start the services.
  4. Open the MetaMiner Administrator, check that the license and the Power BI environment are shown, and click Start Server. The first start after an upgrade applies database updates, including updates to the Power BI schema. It can take noticeably longer than a normal start.
  5. Check server\logs\slc.log for the service start line (MetaMiner Service for Windows... started) and, for the Power BI environment, a Pull #1 for Power BI environment ... done line.
  6. Upgrade every client workstation with the client-only installer of the same build. See Install the Client.

The collectors continue from where they stopped before the upgrade. They do not re-read the whole tenant.

What to check in the release notes

Area Look for Action
MetaMiner Client New or changed features Inform users
Microsoft setup New tenant settings, Graph permissions or delegated permissions Update the Entra application and tenant settings before you start the server; run Test Connection again
MetaMiner Database Schema changes, Power BI data that must be collected again Follow the release instructions
Installer Whether the update installer can be used from your build Pick the installer
Collecting all Power BI data again

Only when the release notes or Infolytik support ask for it: on Preferences > Settings... > Advanced, select Drop Power BI schema on next MM Server restart, then restart the server. The server deletes all collected Power BI data and collects the tenant again from the beginning, including the activity backfill. This cannot be undone. Back up the MetaMiner Database first.

Verify

  • The MMA title bar shows the expected version and edition.
  • Help > About in the client shows the same build as the server.
  • Clients connect without an "Incompatible Versions" message.
  • Test Connection for the Power BI environment still passes every step.

Troubleshooting

Clients get Incompatible Versions after the upgrade

The client build differs from the server build. Install the matching client.

The server does not start after the upgrade

Open File > Open MetaMiner Service Log in the MetaMiner Administrator and read the last start attempt. Create a log bundle (File > Create Log Bundle...) and contact support. See Log Bundle for Support.

How do I go back to the previous release?

Restore the backups taken before the upgrade (configuration and MetaMiner Database), then run the full installer of the previous build. A database upgraded by a newer release is not guaranteed to work with an older one, so always restore the database backup.
