Choose the MetaMiner Database¶
Decide whether the MetaMiner Database (MMDB) runs as the embedded PostgreSQL 16 that ships with MetaMiner or on a PostgreSQL 16 (or later) server you manage.
Before you begin¶
- The MetaMiner Database is always PostgreSQL. Other database products are not supported for the MMDB.
- Power BI requires PostgreSQL 16 or later. On an older major version the server starts, but runs no Power BI collection.
- The MetaMiner Server creates and upgrades every schema itself when it starts, including the
pbischema that holds your tenant metadata. You never run MetaMiner SQL scripts by hand.
Compare the options¶
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| MMA database type | Postgres (embedded) |
| PostgreSQL version | 16.3, shipped in server\pgsql-win-16.3.2\ |
| Windows service | InfolytikPostgres |
| Port | 49614 |
| Database / owner | metaminer / mmuser |
| Data folder | server\data\mmdb\ |
| Created | Automatically on the first start of the MetaMiner Server |
Choose this unless your organization requires databases on a managed PostgreSQL server. Nothing to install or provision.
- The MetaMiner Server starts the
InfolytikPostgresservice when needed and never stops it. - Backups are your responsibility; see Back Up and Restore MMDB.
- Details and service options: Embedded PostgreSQL.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| MMA database type | Postgres |
| PostgreSQL version | 16 or later (required for Power BI) |
| You provide | Host, port, database name, owner account and password |
| Created | You create the empty database and the owner account; MetaMiner creates the schemas |
Choose this when your DBA team must host, patch and back up all databases, or when you need the database on separate hardware.
- The MetaMiner Administrator warns when the PostgreSQL major version is older than 16.
- Setup steps: External PostgreSQL.
TODO: confirm the supported external PostgreSQL versions and required privileges
Confirm the maximum certified PostgreSQL version for an external MMDB, and the exact privileges the owner account needs (the server creates schemas and a read-only role at startup).
Steps¶
- Open the MetaMiner Administrator.
- In MetaMiner Database Configuration, click Configure MMDB.
- Select the database type:
Postgres (embedded)orPostgres. - For
Postgres, enter host, port, database, user name and password. - Save and close the dialog.

Verify¶
- The MetaMiner Database Configuration section of the MetaMiner Administrator shows a green status after the connection test.
- For embedded: after the first server start, Windows Services lists
InfolytikPostgresas running. - After the first server start,
server\logs\server.logcontainsMMDB PostgreSQL major version: 16(or higher) and no line startingPower BI requires MMDB PostgreSQL.
Troubleshooting¶
server.log says Power BI requires MMDB PostgreSQL 16+
The database runs an older PostgreSQL major version, so Power BI collection is blocked. Installations upgraded from older releases can still run an older embedded PostgreSQL. Contact Infolytik support to plan the move to PostgreSQL 16, or point MetaMiner at an external PostgreSQL 16 server.
Port 49614 is in use
Another program holds the port. Free the port, or select Allow to edit PG embedded host/port on Preferences > Settings... > Advanced and then change the port in Configure MMDB before the first start.
