Start and Stop the Server

Start, stop and restart the MetaMiner Server (MMS) and its companion services from MMA or from the Windows command line.

Before you begin

  • Sign in to the MetaMiner Server machine as a local administrator.
  • Run MMA as administrator; see Introduction.
  • Know which services exist on your installation; see Windows Services.

Steps

Start from MMA

  1. In the MMA main window, click Start Server.
  2. If MMA warns that free memory is low, free memory or lower the server memory allocation, then try again. See Memory and JVM.
  3. Wait while MMA shows "Starting MetaMiner Server Windows service...".

MMA first saves any pending change, then starts the services in this order:

  1. metaminer (MetaMiner Service). If a previous server process is still shutting down, MMA waits for it to exit first.
  2. When the MMDB runs as the Windows service InfolytikPostgres, MMA waits until the database accepts connections.
  3. MetaMinerWebApps (MetaMiner Web Apps Service), if installed.
  4. MetaMinerFSS (Flow Scheduler), only when it is enabled. It is used only with Tableau.

MMA then reads this start attempt's log and reports one of three outcomes: started, still starting, or failed with the reason from the log.

Memory check before start

MMA compares free physical memory with the server memory allocation. Below 10% free it refuses to start; below 20% it asks you to confirm.

Stop from MMA

  1. Click Stop Server.
  2. Wait until the button changes back to Start Server.

MMA stops MetaMinerWebApps, then MetaMinerFSS (if running), then metaminer. MMS disconnects clients first, then shuts down its internal services. It never stops the InfolytikPostgres database service.

Restart after a settings change

When you save Preferences > Settings... while the server runs, MMA asks "MetaMiner Server is running. All changes would be applied only after restart. Would you like to restart now?". Click Yes to restart now, or restart later.

Start and stop from the command line

Open a command prompt as administrator:

Stop and start MetaMiner
net stop MetaMinerWebApps
net stop metaminer
net start metaminer
net start MetaMinerWebApps

Unlike MMA, net start metaminer does not start the companion services for you.

Verify

  • The MMA button reads Stop Server and the health indicator shows no red state.
  • server\logs\slc.log contains the line "MetaMiner Service for Windows(R) started".
  • MetaMiner Client users can connect.

Troubleshooting

The service starts, then stops

MMS exits with a non-zero code when startup fails, and Windows reports the service as stopped. Check server\logs\slc.log and server\logs\server.start.log, or click the health indicator in MMA.

Exit code Meaning
0 Normal stop
1 Startup failed, for example invalid license, port already in use, or database startup failure
2 Shutdown took longer than the stop budget
3 The server stopped unexpectedly without a stop request
Stop takes a long time

MMS gives its internal services up to 120 seconds to stop. A long pull or database operation can use the whole budget. The budget is the system property services.stop.timeout.seconds; change it only on advice from Infolytik Support.

Access is denied

Close MMA and start it again with Run as administrator.

MMA says the server is still starting

Startup continues in the background, for example while database updates run after an upgrade. The server accepts connections early but refuses client requests with a "starting up" answer until startup finishes. Watch server.log or the health indicator.
