Monitor

The Monitor web app (Pulse) charts CPU, memory and disk for your BusinessObjects hosts and server processes, and for the MetaMiner Server itself.

Before you begin

  • The Pulse (/web/monitor) switch is on: see Enable the Web Console.
  • The MetaMiner Database (MMDB) is PostgreSQL. Host metrics are stored there and sampling is on by default (server property metrics.pg.enabled).
  • For the BusinessObjects page: the MetaMiner agent runs on each BO host and reports to the MetaMiner Server (MMS). See Host Metrics.
  • The MMS port is reachable only from your administrators' network. See Network Exposure.

Open it

  • In the MetaMiner Client (MMC) choose File > Launch Pulse..., or
  • open https://<mms-host>:<port>/web/monitor/ in a browser.

The app opens on the BusinessObjects page. Switch pages with the BusinessObjects and MetaMiner Server tabs in the top bar.

Time range and refresh

Control Values Default
Time range 5m, 15m, 1h, 6h, 24h, 7d, 30d, 180d 5m on BusinessObjects, 15m on MetaMiner Server
Refresh Refresh off, Every 5s, Every 10s, Every 30s, Every 1m Every 5s

Ranges up to 6 hours show raw samples (BO hosts every 10 seconds, MMS JVM every 5 seconds, MMS disk every 30 seconds). Longer ranges show hourly rollups. The range, refresh and environment are kept in the page address, so a bookmark reopens the same view. Refresh pauses while the browser tab is hidden.

Status badges always carry a word, not only a colour: Normal, Elevated, High or No data.

BusinessObjects page

Pick the environment in the environment list and, optionally, narrow to some servers with the Server selector.

../images/web-console/monitor-bo.png

Key figure What it shows Elevated / High at
Machine CPU (or Machine CPU (busiest host)) Current CPU of the busiest BO host, with its average over the range 50 / 80 percent
Host memory used Memory in use on the BO hosts 80 / 92 percent
BO install volume Used space on the disk that holds the BO installation 80 / 90 percent
BO footprint (RSS) Memory held by all BO server processes on this environment -
BIP servers reporting Servers sending metrics out of servers known; flags silent servers -
MetaMiner agent CPU used by the MetaMiner agent itself on the busiest host -
Panel What it shows
CPU % vs. BIP server CPU per BO server process (main and child processes summed, bucket maximum); click a row to hide a series
Machine CPU CPU per host, bucket maximum
Host memory used Memory per host, bucket average
Memory (RSS) by BIP server Stacked memory per BO server; the top line is the BO footprint
BIP server inventory Table per server: Server, CPU now, CPU mean, CPU max, CPU trend, RSS now, RSS max, Procs, PID, Uptime, Restarts

MetaMiner Server page

Image of the Monitor MetaMiner Server page, range 24h: key figures row, CPU load and JVM heap charts

../images/web-console/monitor-mms.png

Key figure What it shows Elevated / High at
MMS process CPU CPU of the MMS process, mean and maximum over the range 50 / 80 percent
Host CPU CPU of the whole MMS machine 60 / 85 percent
JVM heap Heap used, committed and maximum 75 / 90 percent
Host memory Physical memory used of installed 85 / 95 percent
Server volume free Free space on the MMS disk, with a projection of days to full (after 6 hours of samples) 80 / 90 percent used
MMDB size Size of the MetaMiner Database, with its growth per day -
Metrics store Space the host and server metrics take in the MMDB -
Rollup job Time since the metrics rollup job last ran, and its status -
Panel What it shows
CPU load MMS process and whole host, bucket maximum
JVM heap Used against committed; a dashed line marks the maximum heap
Host physical memory Used against installed RAM
Server volume free Free GB, bucket minimum
MMDB size GB over time
Metrics pipeline How far the rollup has progressed, where raw samples start, the newest sample per feed, and the last three rollup runs with their status

Troubleshooting

The BusinessObjects page shows No data

No MetaMiner agent has reported for that environment in the range. Check the agent on the BO hosts and widen the range.

A server shows as silent in BIP servers reporting

The server is known for the environment but sent no samples in the range: it is stopped, or its process is not matched. Check it in the CMC.

Rollup job shows Not run yet

Ranges over 6 hours need the rollup job. Check that the MetaMiner Server has been running long enough for its first run, and look at the Metrics pipeline panel for the last message.
