FAQ

Short answers to the questions BusinessObjects administrators ask most often about MetaMiner.

BusinessObjects access

Which BusinessObjects account should MetaMiner use?

A dedicated account (many sites call it MetaMinerAdmin) that is a direct member of the BusinessObjects Administrators group, so MetaMiner can read every folder, user and document. A dedicated account also makes MetaMiner's own logons and document opens easy to filter out of audit statistics. See Accounts and Permissions.

Which BusinessObjects versions are supported?

See Supported BusinessObjects Versions.

Does MetaMiner write to my CMS or audit database?

No. MetaMiner opens read-only connections to the audit and CMS repository databases, and you can configure read-only database accounts for them. BusinessObjects content changes only when an MMC user with the right permissions runs a content operation, such as copy and paste, remap or promotion; those go through the BusinessObjects SDK like any other client.

Do I need to connect the audit database and the CMS database?

The audit database is needed for usage history (who opened or refreshed what). The CMS repository database is optional; when configured, MetaMiner reads the repository directly and pulls faster. See Audit and CMS Databases.

Will MetaMiner's activity show up in our audit data?

Yes. MetaMiner logs on and opens documents as its service account, and BusinessObjects audits that like any user. Exclude the account from MetaMiner's audit statistics with the audit user name exclusions in MMA Preferences > Settings > Audit.

Can MMC users work with their own BusinessObjects logon?

Yes. An environment can require each MMC user to log on with their own BusinessObjects account, so they see only what BusinessObjects allows them to see. See BusinessObjects User Logon.

Pulls and data

How often does MetaMiner pull?

Each environment pulls in repeating cycles; each cycle reads only what changed. By default Web Intelligence and universe deep processing run every 5 minutes, server metrics every 5 minutes, audit at most every 20 minutes and security extraction every 30 minutes. See Pull and Pull Schedule and Exclusions.

How do I start a pull now?

In the MMC, right-click the environment row and choose Force On Demand Pull....

How do I keep MetaMiner from pulling during our maintenance window?

Add a pull exclusion window to the environment in the MMA. See Pull Schedule and Exclusions.

Why does an object I deleted still appear in the MMC?

Deletions are detected during each pull cycle. Press F5 to refresh, and check that the environment's pulls complete. See Pull Problems.

Can MetaMiner keep earlier versions of Web Intelligence documents and universes?

Yes. Turn on Keep Web Intelligence versions? and Keep Universe versions? in MMA Preferences > Settings > Backup. Versions can then be compared in Visual Diff. Universe versions are kept by default; Web Intelligence versions are not.

What happens to a running pull when the service restarts?

The pull stops. After the restart, MetaMiner reloads what it already stored in the MetaMiner Database and the next cycle continues from there. Nothing needs to be reset.

Notifications

How do I stop pull notifications for one environment?

In the MMC, right-click the environment row and choose Suspend Pull Notifications..., then choose for how long. See Notifications.

What does the Webi Processing Failure email mean?

MetaMiner cannot reach a Web Intelligence Processing Server. See Web Intelligence Processing Failures.

Installation, upgrade and operation

Do the installers start MetaMiner?

No. Neither the full nor the update installer starts the services or the MetaMiner Database. Start MetaMiner from the MMA after the installer finishes. See Start and Stop the Server.

Must the MetaMiner Client and Server be the same version?

Yes. The MMC refuses to connect to a server from a different release. Upgrade the clients when you upgrade the server. See Connection Problems.

Which port do clients need?

TCP 49714 from each MMC and browser to the MetaMiner server, unless you changed it. See Ports.

Can I use my own PostgreSQL server for the MetaMiner Database?

Yes. See Choose the MetaMiner Database and External PostgreSQL.

Do I need to restart after changing a setting?

The MMA offers a restart after you save settings; accept it. Changes to MetaMinerServer.properties always need a service restart. See Server Properties.

How much memory does MetaMiner need?

See System Requirements and Performance and Memory.

How do I move MetaMiner to a new server?

See Moving to a New Server.

Are the passwords in the configuration protected?

Passwords in config.json are stored encrypted. You can also encrypt the whole configuration file. Restrict access to the server\config\ folder to administrators. See Encrypting the Configuration.

Does the MMC use the Windows certificate store for SSL?

No. The MMC trusts the certificates in its own Java runtime's trust store. See Client System Variables.

Is the Web Console on by default?

The BusinessObjects console and the Monitor app are off by default. Turn them on in MMA Preferences > Settings > Web Apps. See Enable the Web Console.

Support

Where are the log files?

Server logs are in server\logs\; client logs are in %APPDATA%\MetaMiner\logs\. See Log Files.

How do I send logs to Infolytik Support?

In the MMA, choose File > Create Log Bundle... and attach the ZIP to your support request. See Contact Support.
