Copy, Cut and Paste

Copy or move BusinessObjects folders and objects to another folder in the same environment, directly from the CMS Explorer.

License and permission

Copy and Paste need the "Paste" permission. Cut also needs "Delete", because the source objects are removed after the move. Permissions are checked on the environment; see Permissions Reference. The CMS Explorer needs a license with the BusinessObjects client features (Editions and Licensing).

Same environment only

Paste works only into a folder of the environment the objects were copied from. To copy content to another environment, use Export to... (Export to CMS and LCM) or the Backup and Promote Wizard.

Before you begin

  • The objects and the target folder are loaded in the CMS Explorer.
  • Inboxes and favorites folders cannot be copied or cut.

TODO: confirm how paste handles name conflicts in the target folder and the exact effect of Preserve tree structure

Source to check: server paste implementation and a live test with a selection from several folders.

Steps

  1. Select the objects or folders in the CMS Explorer.
  2. Press Ctrl+C to copy or Ctrl+X to cut (or right-click and choose Copy or Cut).
  3. Select the target folder.
  4. Press Ctrl+V (or right-click and choose Paste). Result: the client prepares the paste ("Preparing paste, it could take some time...") and opens Confirm Paste Parameters.
  5. Check the Target: folder and the preview tree, then set the options:

    Option Default Effect
Include folder contents On Copies the objects inside selected folders
Include document instances On Copies scheduled instances of the documents
Copy sub-tree On Copies sub-folders recursively
Preserve tree structure On Recreates the folder structure of the selection under the target

The dialog shows how many objects will be copied. 6. Click OK.

Result: the paste runs in the background. Follow it in Task History in the status bar. When it finishes, the client shows "Copy-paste completed. N object(s) copied." or "Cut-paste completed. N object(s) moved." and the tree is updated.

Verify

  • Expand the target folder in the CMS Explorer and check the new objects.
  • For a cut, check that the objects are gone from the source folder.

Copy Full Path The folder path of the row

Troubleshooting

Paste is greyed out

The clipboard holds objects from another environment, the target is not a folder, or you do not have the "Paste" permission on the target environment.

One item was not pasted during the Cut-Paste

The CMS rejected one object, for example because of rights on the source or target. The other objects are moved. Check the task in Task History and the client log (File > Open MetaMiner Log).

Copied documents are not bound to the expected universe

Copy keeps the universe and connection references of the source. To change them, use Universe Remap or Connection Remap.
