Properties

View an object's key properties in the Properties dialog, and view or edit the full BusinessObjects property bag of many objects at once with the extended properties editor.

License and permission

The Properties dialog needs no extra permission. View Extended Properties needs the "View Extended Properties" permission and Modify Extended Properties... needs "Modify Extended Properties" on the object's environment. See Permissions Reference.

Properties dialog

Select one row and press Alt+Enter, or right-click and choose Properties....

The dialog shows the properties MetaMiner collected for the object. The tabs depend on the object type:

Object Tabs
Documents, folders, universes, connections General (property table and description)
Servers General, Metrics
Users General, Advanced
Environment General (includes audit database status)

When the object has tags, they are listed under the table. For a failed instance the dialog also shows the error message of the failed instance.

TODO: confirm which object types show the System User tab

The dialog builds a System User tab for some object types. Verify which ones on a live client.

View extended properties

Extended properties are the raw BusinessObjects properties (the SI_ property tree) read live from the CMS.

  1. Select one or more objects in the CMS Explorer.
  2. Right-click and choose View > View Extended Properties.

Result: a tree of property groups and properties per object opens, with a search box (Search in values only, Strict) and an export button. You can open the result in a closable tab with Open in New Tab > Selection Only / Selection and Children.

CSV export of the property tree writes the columns Path, Object Name, Property Group Type, Property Path, Property Name and the value.

Modify extended properties

Before you begin

  • You have the "Modify Extended Properties" permission on the environment.
  • Read-only properties cannot be changed; the edit actions are disabled for them.

Steps

  1. Select the objects, right-click and choose Modify > Modify Extended Properties....
  2. In the property tree, select one or more properties of the same type.
  3. Right-click and choose an action:

    Action Effect
Edit Enter a new value (a date/time chooser opens for date properties). Applies to all selected properties
    Clear Empties the value
    Delete... Removes the property
Find and Replace... Finds text in string property values (Find in value:) and replaces it (Replace with:). Shows Current Value and New Value before you apply
  4. Confirm the change.

Result: MMS writes the changed properties to the CMS.

Changes are written to BusinessObjects

Editing, clearing or deleting a property changes the object in the CMS immediately. There is no undo in MetaMiner. Back up the objects first, for example with Save > Save as BIAR Backup....

Verify

Reopen View Extended Properties for the objects and check the new values.

Troubleshooting

Find and Replace says no properties were found

Find and Replace works only on properties of type String that are not read-only. The message "No non-readonly properties of String type found!" means the selection has none.

The edit actions are greyed out

The selected properties are read-only, are of different types (Edit), or you do not have the "Modify Extended Properties" permission.
